Question:
Killing an animal is a ruthless act. Why then do Muslims consume non-vegetarian food?
Answer: (By Dr. Zakir Naik)
‘Vegetarianism’ is now a movement the world over. Many even associate it with animal rights. Indeed, a large number of people consider the consumption of meat and other non-vegetarian products to be a violation of animal rights.
Islam enjoins mercy and compassion for all living creatures. At the same time Islam maintains that Allah has created the earth and its wondrous flora and fauna for the benefit of mankind. It is upto mankind to use every resource in this world judiciously, as a niyamat (Divine blessing) and amanat (trust) from Allah.
Let us look at various other aspects of this argument.
1. A Muslim can be a pure vegetarian
A Muslim can be a very good Muslim despite being a pure vegetarian. It is not compulsory for a Muslim to have non-vegetarian food.
2. Qur’an permits Muslims to have non-vegetarian food
The Qur’an, however permits a Muslim to have non-vegetarian food. The following Qur’anic verses are proof of this fact:
“O ye who believe! Fulfil (all) obligations. Lawful unto you (for food) are all four-footed animals with the exceptions named.”
[Al-Qur’an 5:1]
“And cattle He has created for you (men): from them Ye derive warmth, and numerous benefits, And of their (meat) ye eat.”
[Al-Qur’an 16:5]
“And in cattle (too) ye have an instructive example: From within their bodies We produce (milk) for you to drink; there are, in them, (besides), numerous (other) benefits for you; and of their (meat) ye eat.”
[Al-Qur’an 23:21]
3. Meat is nutritious and rich in complete protein
Non-vegetarian food is a good source of excellent protein. It contains biologically complete protein i.e. all the 8 essential amino acid that are not synthesized by the body and should be supplied in the diet. Meat also contains iron, vitamin B1 and niacin.
4. Humans have Omnivorous set of teeth
If you observe the teeth of herbivorous animals like the cow, goat and sheep, you will find something strikingly similar in all of them. All these animals have a set of flat teeth i.e. suited for herbivorous diet. If you observe the set of teeth of the carnivorous animals like the lion, tiger, or leopard, they all have a set of pointed teeth i.e. suited for a carnivorous diet. If you analyze the set of teeth of humans, you find that they have flat teeth as well as pointed teeth. Thus they have teeth suited for both herbivorous as well as carnivorous food i.e. they are omnivorous. One may ask, if Almighty God wanted humans to have only vegetables, why did He provide us also with pointed teeth? It is logical that He expected us to need and to have both vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian food.
5. Human beings can digest both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food
The digestive system of herbivorous animals can digest only vegetables. The digestive system of carnivorous animals can digest only meat. But the digestive system of humans can digest both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. If Almighty God wanted us to have only vegetables then why did He give us a digestive system that can digest both vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian food?
6. Hindu scriptures give permission to have non-vegetarian food
1. There are many Hindus who are strictly vegetarian. They think it is against their religion to consume non-vegetarian food. But the true fact is that the Hindu scriptures permit a person to have meat. The scriptures mention Hindu sages and saints consuming non-vegetarian food.
2. It is mentioned in Manu Smruti, the law book of Hindus, in chapter 5 verse 30
“The eater who eats the flesh of those to be eaten does nothing bad, even if he does it day after day, for God himself created some to be eaten and some to be eater.”
3. Again next verse of Manu Smruti, that is, chapter 5 verse 31 says
“Eating meat is right for the sacrifice, this is traditionally known as a rule of the gods.”
4. Further in Manu Smruti chapter 5 verse 39 and 40 says
“God himself created sacrificial animals for sacrifice, …., therefore killing in a sacrifice is not killing.”
5. Mahabharata Anushashan Parva chapter 88 narrates the discussion between Dharmaraj Yudhishthira and Pitamah Bhishma about what food one should offer to Pitris (ancestors) during the Shraddha (ceremony of dead) to keep them satisfied. Paragraph reads as follows:
“Yudhishthira said, “O thou of great puissance, tell me what that object is which, if dedicated to the Pitiris (dead ancestors), become inexhaustible! What Havi, again, (if offered) lasts for all time? What, indeed, is that which (if presented) becomes eternal?”
“Bhishma said, “Listen to me, O Yudhishthira, what those Havis are which persons conversant with the rituals of the Shraddha (the ceremony of dead) regard as suitable in view of Shraddha and what the fruits are that attach to each. With sesame seeds and rice and barely and Masha and water and roots and fruits, if given at Shraddhas, the pitris, O king, remain gratified for the period of a month. With fishes offered at Shraddhas, the pitris remain gratified for a period of two months. With the mutton they remain gratified for three months and with the hare for four months, with the flesh of the goat for five months, with the bacon (meat of pig) for six months, and with the flesh of birds for seven. With venison obtained from those deer that are called Prishata, they remaingratified for eight months, and with that obtained from the Ruru for nine months, and with the meat of Gavaya for ten months, With the meat of the bufffalo their gratification lasts for eleven months. With beef presented at the Shraddha, their gratification, it is said , lasts for a full year. Payasa mixed with ghee is as much acceptable to the pitris as beef. With the meat of Vadhrinasa (a large bull) the gratification of pitris lasts for twelve years. The flesh of rhinoceros, offered to the pitris on anniversaries of the lunar days on which they died, becomes inexhaustible. The potherb called Kalaska, the petals of kanchana flower, and meat of (red) goat also, thus offered, prove inexhaustible.
So but natural if you want to keep your ancestors satisfied forever, you should serve them the meat of red goat.
7. Hinduism was influenced by other religions
Though Hindu Scriptures permit its followers to have non-vegetarian food, many Hindus adopted the vegetarian system because they were influenced by other religions like Jainism.
8. Even plants have life
Certain religions have adopted pure vegetarianism as a dietary law because they are totally against the killing of living creatures. If a person can survive without killing any living creature, I would be the first person to adopt such a way of life. In the past people thought plants were lifeless. Today it is a universal fact that even plants have life. Thus their logic of not killing living creatures is not fulfilled even by being a pure vegetarian.
9. Even plants can feel pain
They further argue that plants cannot feel pain, therefore killing a plant is a lesser crime as compared to killing an animal. Today science tells us that even plants can feel pain. But the cry of the plant cannot be heard by the human being. This is due to the inability of the human ear to hear sounds that are not in the audible range i.e. 20 Hertz to 20,000 Hertz. Anything below and above this range cannot be heard by a human being. A dog can hear up to 40,000 Hertz. Thus there are silent dog whistles that have a frequency of more than 20,000 Hertz and less than 40,000 Hertz. These whistles are only heard by dogs and not by human beings. The dog recognizes the masters whistle and comes to the master. There was research done by a farmer in U.S.A. who invented an instrument which converted the cry of the plant so that it could be heard by human beings. He was able to realize immediately when the plant itself cried for water. Latest researches show that the plants can even feel happy and sad. It can also cry.
10. Killing a living creature with two senses less is not a lesser crime
Once a vegetarian argued his case by saying that plants only have two or three senses while the animals have five senses.
Therefore killing a plant is a lesser crime than killing an animal. Suppose your brother is born deaf and dumb and has two senses less as compared to other human beings. He becomes mature and someone murders him. Would you ask the judge to give the murderer a lesser punishment because your brother has two senses less? In fact you would say that he has killed a masoom, an innocent person, and the judge should give the murderer a greater punishment.
In fact the Qur’an says:
“O ye people! Eat of what is on earth, lawful and good”
[Al-Qur’an 2:168]
11. Over population of cattle
If every human being was a vegetarian, it would lead to overpopulation of cattle in the world, since their reproduction and multiplication is very swift. Allah (swt) in His Divine Wisdom knows how to maintain the balance of His creation appropriately. No wonder He has permitted us to have the meat of the cattle.
12. Cost of meat is reasonable since all aren’t non-vegetarians
I do not mind if some people are pure vegetarians. However they should not condemn non-vegetarians as ruthless. In fact if all Indians become non-vegetarians then the present non-vegetarians would be losers since the prices of meat would rise.

THAT time he is out of Pakistan its all talk and sms by just mobile .
After 2month he called his sister and told her that he want to back her so plz call her and tell to her that I want to rajoh with her but his sister phoned to her sister in law about rajoh then her sister in law said there is no chance for rajoh .
Then he niayah to call her himself to get her back and rajoh with her he called but her mobile was switched off he try 3 or four time but her mobile was switched off then he said to his cousin that he did niyah that he want to back her .
Now her gave a birth of baby boy and her parents after delivery they gave son to her housband since last week she is weeping and try to come back to her housband and her son but her perants said there is no condition in islam to remarry to her with her housband.

Coz in quran surah baqra aayat no 228 and 232 that
And when you divorce women and their period are completed, then O guardians of women! Prevent them not from marrying their husbands, when they agree among themselves according to law. This counsel is given to him who among you have faith in Allah and the Last Day. This is cleaner and purer for you, and Allah knows and you do not know.
So plz tell me now they what to do or they make new nekah with new mehar coz still she is in iddat if divore is done then ..
And also I read in hadith that the time of our PROPHET MUHAMMAD SALLAHU ALAILE WASALLIM that three divore will b counted as a one and the time of HAZRAT ABU BAKKAR RAHIALLAH TALHA UNHO same three talaq are counted as a one and after the time of khalfat HAZRAT UMER FAROOD RAHIALLAH TALHA UNHO three talaq counted as one .
So please tell me as soon as possible that now they what to do coz they both her ready to do any thing which is in islam .give me answer in the light of QURAN and sahi Hadith

many faiths.
I was told today that no version of this appears in the Qur’an,
however, I am sure I have read it, but I cannot remember where. I am
not well versed yet in the Qur’an as I am just learning. So, can
someone please point me in the right direction.
The only thing I have found is a Hadith saying that the Prophet

why u should not eat non veg…
in every religion it is said that jivo pe daya karo.
Paramatma has constituted the body of every living being according to specific requirements of that particular creature. Human body was composed in such a way that made it a vegetarian species. There is a distinct difference between herbivorous and carnivorous creatures. The difference is in the form of length of their entails or intestines. It is believed that intestines of carnivorous creatures are short in comparison to herbivorous beings. The approximate dimensions of human intestines measures up to that of other carnivorous animals. But not with those of carnivorous entities like lion etc.
i have scientific approach towards everything. Nevertheless, it is said that non-vegetarian food is beneficial. In the text books of schools it is explicitly mentioned if someone wants calcium he is recommended to consume milk, eggs, paneer, meat and fish. Calcium is present in all these foodstuffs. So it is widely believed that non-vegetarian food yields calcium.
i have my own way of looking at the issue. When a person consumes meat, it gets converted into different enzymes in his body. One such enzyme is uric acid. Uric acid is highly toxic capable of neutralizing our body if it is presents in large proportions. Calcium is the only antidote to counter the ill effects of uric acid. Now, isn’t it strange that calcium which itself accrues from non-vegetarian food is required to offset the harmful effects of non-vegetarian food? It is some what akin to the instance of capital money being required to tide over the repercussions of gross interest. In the same manner, people with non-vegetarian food habits have comparatively weaker bones as borne out by the high ratio of osteoporosis, an extremely fatal bone related disease. Percentage of this disease is higher in non-vegetarians as compared to vegetarians.
Now I have clearly explained the actual reality of the whole issue regarding consumption of meat. Now let us come to another point which pertains to vegetarian food. These days extensive chemicals are used in growing the vegetables. And insecticides are used in protecting the crops. These chemicals have toxic contents. When you wash the vegetables before cooking them, this poison is removed from the foodstuff. Similarly urea is mixed with poultry feed at many places. This is done in order to facilitate growth in their sizes. External additives such as these are fat-soluble. Meaning these chemicals are dissolved in the fat of animals who consume them. Sometimes in the proportion of sixty percent. You consume that much of chemicals when you eat such food. To the effect that a non-vegetarian person becomes highly vulnerable to diseases like cancer.
All the same, you should eat Tejyukt (bearing life force energy) which is imperishable. Law of nature states that fruits, leaves, vegetables, leafs etc have very high content of life force energy. That’s why fruits and vegetables are able to retain their freshness long after they are plucked out, while Tej in animals is confined only till the time they are active, the moment they are killed or slaughtered they become Nishtej (lifeless). If you keep meat and fruits side by side for the whole day, by the evening fruit will be fresh with its smell whereas meat will produce foul smell, because it has started to decay. The moment Tej becomes extinct decay sets in. Decay is degeneration. It is a continuation of death. Fruit will never exhibit these symptoms even if you keep it for one month. Difference between fruit and meat lies in their respective life span. Or you can say Tej. If you consume meat you unwittingly consume all its concomitant ingredients of decay. The decaying process takes roots in your own body. That’s why herbivorous beings have comparatively healthy and strong composition. With comparison carnivorous beings are small in size and also composition. Same goes for their longevity too.

Hello Zakir,
I would like to give a post by post reply, but unfortunately, a quick reply to you is what i can give.
Fact 1: Hinduism is not a religion. It is a way of life.
Fact 2: Veda, purana, upanishad speaks about the way of life for a discreet set of individuals, and not the whole section of Hinduism.
Fact 3: You do not need permission unlike other religions in Hinduism, your own way of life determines whether you wish to be a veg/non-vegetarian.
Fact 4: The veda depicts 7 generation of hierarchy. Following the steps to open a path for each level. The highest level is a Brahman. A Brahman’s way of life is completely different from the hunters.

Yes,Brahmins are at the highest level.I am a Hindu and knows the vegetarianism is a divine way of life and yes it is preached by hinduism ,though some hindus who want to eat meat just deny this to continue eating what they want. However ,Food is most sacred to Hindus and no sacred food can contain such horror of eating an animal flesh and blood.
And yes the Brahmins at the highest level were completely vegetarians and will always be .

in actual you are quite wrong about vegetarian not being able to fulfil the criterea of not kill living creatures. Though plants are alive and do feel the pain eventually that is the way they reproduce….. Fruits, vegetables all have seeds and have to be consumed for another offspring of the plant to grow and survive!!!! This is definitly not true in case of animals!! they don’t need to be consumed or eaten up to sustain their species!!!!

My dear friends m vageterian and i believe that every human on this earth shoud be vegeterian and its true that plant also has life but crop use to cut after completing life cycle and if can’t pluck a fruit then it will be fell down automatically after having rip but God never gave u any rights to kill a living animal, A big shame on u Mr. Zakir and those people who believes ans make many excuses to eat non-veg.. Those people must have to pay in front of Almighty on day….. Pls afraid of God while doing this..

Brother it seems that you haven’t read the post completely. No where does Quran prohibit eating non-veg.
Check the Points no 1 & 2 in this post (also quoted below)

This is a completely wrong representation and converison of the facts mentioned in Quran .Nothinglike this is mentioned. Moreover our Quran doesnt ever mention to eat meat or cattle .Thats why so many Muslims ..infact a complete sect of ours who understand this are vegetarians .Moreover I also believe that the festival of Bakri Id is completely wrong .Killions billions and billions of animals that day in name of my religion ,I really feel very sad and bad.Animals must be loved on that day .How can someone kill in name of religion so openly .Muslims must become vegetarians to show the world how peaceful our religion is .

Muzakarah 6 sifat
Taat mengamalkan perintah Allah s.w.t. (Quran) laksana sahabat r.a. mengikut cara Rasulallah s.a.w. (Hadith). Ulamak mengkaji terdapat 6 sifat sahabat r.anhu yang unggul untuk di amalkan agar mendapatkan kesempurnan agama dalam diri kita.
1. Hakikat kalimah Laa’ilaaha’ilAllah (mengeluarkan kebesaran makhluk yang tidak berkuasa masukkan kebesaran Allah s.w.t. Maha berkuasa) dan Muhammadurrasulallah (sanya cara Rasulallah s.a.w. sahaja ada kejayaan cara lain tiada kejayaan).

This is a completely non sense article..picked up by childish and baseless points ..as if he is screaming to prove that eating non vegetarian food is good .He and the world knows its cruel and unethical to eat non veg.In the end he mentions about calling non vegetarians ruthless..and so they are,so they should be called.Vegetarism has little to do with religion .Its a way of life .Its a noble thought which is way above any religious attachments .Its a divine way of life.
And talking about over population of cattle, let this person be reminded that 99 percent of beef production is from artifically grown cattles for food and not naturally born .Are you not aware of animal Farming.
Go get the basic facts right first, then write such baseless articles.

In 21ST CENTURY dont ask such questions and follow blind faiths..Women used burkhas because people used to earlier see women as sex object and with bad intentions..But now things have changed.People treat women with respect and see them as equals. But I am not telling we should roome around in bikinis. We should be modestly dressses ,but in this 21st century and modernisation and scientific world ,we must not sit behing in burkhas..apart from being non professional ,its so uncomfortable as well

Shenaz here/.I am from US and if I were a burkha and rome around like that here everyone will laugh and criticize me .as Farheen mentioned its is so unconfortable too.We live in modern world and so we must not think about these old traditions and old world things.Only then muslims will do progress apart from sectors other than oil.See Indian women have changed so much and become so modern and they are doing progress everywhere. If thry would have been sitting in their goonghats India would have no progressed.I see in my city ,so many Indian girls in skirts and modern dresses and they are treated equals to americans .I will never wear a burkha and go around atleast in the US .

Hinduism is a way of living and the mankind is following the way i.e Hinduism from the day man came on this earth. There were some bad things in Hinduism also because some selfish men distorted the things for their own interest. Like some beliefs in the medieval history of India that sacrifice of animals is a religious obligation. The best thing in Hinduism is ‘Live and let live.’
and i have noticed that Dr. Zakir Naik is spreading misbeliefs about Hinduism.
as he is a crazy man.

I would like to say to Dr.Zakir Naik that if you reply to any of the comments, the readers may argue in a very bad way and it may lead to a religious conflict and they may even use slang
So, its better not to reply or not to let them comment on your posts.
You are really doing a good job.

Dear Frnds,
What matters most is if u carry on with compassion and love towards your fellow beings, im sure it doesn’t matter whether u are veg or non veg in ur diets.
even great saints from india and everywhere else have emphasized on cleansing the mind rather then discriminating , im sure when quran says about diet , the much emphasis is like mother teaching her child – that diet is not relevant only ur manners count……although i accept i havent read quran that well

Here are some comments posted by non-muslims by the name of muslims, like muslims shouldn’t eat non-veg, and avoid burka, modesty etc. DR.Zakir Naik has given best answers with quotation, who have read those know that its 100% true and logic, but to defend themselves and their belief they argue. there is no need to answer such illogical questions.
